Basic Operation Guide

Step-by-step instructions for loading, monitoring, and safely operating the dryer.

Before you start

  • Make sure the dryer is on level ground with clear airflow around the unit
  • Confirm the solar system is connected and the unit is powered on
  • Wash hands and prepare a clean work area for handling fish
  • Sort fish and remove any that are clearly spoiled before loading
  • Keep children and untrained helpers away from the chamber during operation

Step 1 — Prepare the fish

Rinse or prepare fish according to your usual processing practice. For anchovies (dagaa), spread fish evenly so they dry consistently — avoid thick piles in one spot.

Step 2 — Load the dryer

  • Open the chamber only when the unit is cool or at a safe standby state
  • Place fish on the drying trays in a single, even layer where possible
  • Do not overfill — overcrowding slows drying and reduces quality
  • Close and secure the chamber door fully before starting a cycle

Step 3 — Start the drying cycle

Switch the dryer on and start the cycle using the on-unit controls provided with your unit. Your Akoliam team will walk you through the first run during setup or training.

Step 4 — Monitor the process

The goal is steady, controlled drying — not maximum heat as fast as possible. Let the sensors and your training guide you on when the batch is approaching readiness.

  • Check temperature and humidity readings on the owner portal dashboard
  • Watch for unusual drops or spikes that may mean the door is open or load is uneven
  • Do not open the chamber repeatedly — heat and humidity escape and extend drying time
  • If your unit is linked to the portal, readings update automatically during the cycle

Step 5 — Know when fish is ready

  • Use portal readings together with visual checks through the agreed inspection method for your unit
  • Properly dried fish should feel dry to the touch, with consistent texture and colour for your market
  • If in doubt, contact Akoliam support before unloading a large batch for sale

Step 6 — Unload safely

  • Allow brief cooling time if the chamber is hot before opening
  • Open the door carefully — hot air may escape
  • Remove trays and pack dried fish in clean, covered containers
  • Clean loose fish debris from trays before the next load

Safety reminders

  • Never block vents or place flammable materials against the unit
  • Do not operate a damaged door seal, fan, or sensor unit — report faults immediately
  • Only trained operators should adjust settings beyond the standard cycle
  • In case of smoke, burning smell, or electrical fault: stop the unit, keep clear, and contact Akoliam support
